These tips can help reduce theft as temperatures rise

securityIt may not feel like it now, but spring really is coming, and the nicer weather sometimes tempts vandals and thieves. Here are some tips for reducing property theft this spring or any time of year:

  • Speak up: If you see a suspicious person in your building, ask if you can help them. If the person has legitimate business in the area, he or she will appreciate your assistance.
  • Lock up: Keep outside doors locked. Do not leave cars unlocked when loading or unloading.
  • Add security cables or a system for smaller items: Secure outdoor appliances, commercial air conditioning units known for having valuable copper arteries, vehicles and trailers.
  • Add cameras for open lots.
  • Consider confinement of vehicles with universal keys, such as skid steers.
  • Set standards: Implement a procedure for a nightly perimeter check, including a last-employee-out sign-out sheet to record who has activated any security systems.
  • Add exterior lighting: A well-lit building is less attractive to intruders.
  • Keep a record: Keep an updated inventory of all equipment.
  • Brand it: Identify property by engraving with company name.
  • Get involved: Participate in a Business Watch group if your community offers one.
  • Enlist an expert’s help: Invest in a business security survey, sometimes offered by your local police department for free.
  • Review your current security plan: It may not be as cost-effective or prevent crime as well as some newer systems currently on the market.
