When snow finally melts, check for Jack Frost’s damage

What with vortexes and plunges, the winter of 2014 has been brutal on human beings and property alike. When (if?) the snow melts this spring, make a point to do a complete survey of your property to check for damage.

Inside, follow plumbing and look for leaking pipe joints.

melting snowWalk the perimeter of your building looking for damage from burrowing rodents, loose siding and loose flashing at the roofline. If ice dams were a problem, have shingles inspected.

Tour your lot to the property lines. Look for cracked or broken tree limbs. Fill potholes and replace missing curb stops in the parking lot. Have buckled sidewalks repaired.

Go over your vehicles in ways you might not have when your fingers felt like icicles. Check oil and fluid levels, review tire pressure and, if you or your employees might have been victims of potholes, have vehicle alignment checked.

If you do need to make an insurance claim, do it as soon as you notice any damage caused by the winter elements. Don’t wait; make any possible repairs right away to prevent further damage.
